Field Notes:
On my 35th birthday I captured this image on Lake McDonald out in Glacier National Park. 35 year may seem like a milestone because of the length of time on this earth. More importantly, to me, I see this day as a rebirth of my artistic direction. I can see my direction now and what I want to accomplish while I am here. I wanted to capture the entire beauty of the sunrise but then I realized that would be impossible. The true beauty is not to document it but to interpret. This is why I love photography because you create something new from something that exists. Much like a sculptor will mold the clay into something they envisioned and similar to the painter who adds paint to a canvas so too is the photographer arranging, removing and creating light onto a camera sensor.
